A car crossed onto the wrong side of the motorway during a three-vehicle crash at Junction 16.

Officers responded to reports of a road traffic collision near the M4 roundabout at 5.30am on Thursday morning which blocked two lanes.

The vehicles involved were recovered by 7am and no-one was injured.

National Highways closed one lane each on either side of the central reservation in order to carry out emergency repairs to the barrier.

This caused delays of up to 15 minutes for drivers approaching the westbound carriageway, though there were no delays for motorists heading eastbound.

By midday, the motorway was fully reopened and the normal flow of traffic resumed.

A National Highways spokesperson said: “Lane 3 is closed in both directions on the M4 in Wiltshire between J15 (Badbury) and J16 (Swindon) to allow for emergency barrier repairs to take place following a collision.

“It was a three-vehicle, non-injury collision on the eastbound carriageway which saw a car cross the central barrier into the westbound carriageway.

“Following recovery of the vehicles, emergency work took place, under lane 3 closures, to repair a 25-metre section of the central reservation barrier, and once complete the closures were lifted.”
