Police have revealed the cause of the fire which broke out at a Swindon hotel, causing 30 guests to evacuate.

Guests staying at The Campanile Hotel on Welton Road in Swindon were rushed out of the building in the early hours of Monday, November 11, after a fire broke out on the roof.

Multiple fire crews from across Wiltshire raced to the hotel on Delta Business Park at around 2.40am, and eight breathing apparatus wearers were sent into the building for a full-scale investigation.

Fire crews attended from Westlea, Swindon, Stratton, Royal Wootton Bassett, Cricklade, Marlborough, Chippenham, Malmesbury, Ramsbury and Calne, as well as vehicles from Devizes.

According to emergency responders, there were approximately 30 guests and staff who had been on the premises at the time.

Police have now confirmed that the incident is believed to have started "accidentally" and was the result of an electrical fault.

"We attended an electrical fire at Campanile Hotel, in Welton Road, at 3.19am on Monday, November 11," said a spokesperson for Wiltshire Police.

"There are no suspicious circumstances."

The fire burnt on for approximately two hours, and the stop was at 6.10am, with all appliances having left the scene by 6.45am.

Although no injuries were sustained as a result of the fire, the Campanile Hotel was left covered in scaffolding on Tuesday morning.

One corner of the roof appears to be missing while supports are left charred.

This comes after reports of smoke billowing from the rooftop in the early hours of Monday morning.

Campanile owns hotels across Europe and the United States, including in cities such as Amsterdam, Berlin, Bordeaux, Glasgow and Washington.

Its three-star Swindon hotel offers 120 bedrooms with private bathrooms, a restaurant and three rooms suitable for corporate meetings or leisure events.

The hotel company has been asked to comment.
