A town centre road could remain closed for three weeks after a fire gutted a takeaway, leaving it “structurally unsafe.”

Firefighters rushed to a blaze at The Kebab and Pizza House on the A360 Northgate Street in Devizes at around 3am on Tuesday, November 12, and have since been battling the fire.

At around 5pm they confirmed they were likely to remain on the scene for several more hours because “pockets” of fire remained.

Wiltshire Council has deemed the building “structurally unsafe”, meaning the scene is likely to remain closed even once emergency crews leave so that “safety precautions” can be carried out.

It is expected these works could take up to 21 days and an order to close the road, between New Park Street and The Market Place, has been issued until December 3.

The busy road could reopen sooner if the works are completed before this date.

Informing residents of the closure, Cllr Iain Wallis warned this could lead to slow traffic in the area.

He added: “Traffic on New Park Street is likely to be heavier than usual so please steer clear if you can.”

Wiltshire Police added that businesses and car parks in the area will remain open throughout.

The Market Place can be accessed via Long Street with Station Road still closed for ongoing roadworks.
