A woman has been taken to hospital following a fire in Swindon.

On Tuesday evening at just before 8pm the fire service were called to a blaze at a three-storey building on Westlecot Road in Old Town.

Several fire engines were seen outside a property on the busy road, including crews from Swindon, Stratton, Westlea, Royal Wootton Bassett and Marlborough.

Firefighters extinguished a fire within a kitchen, first-floor bedroom and roof space while a 51-year-old woman was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene and taken to hospital by ambulance.

A fire engine was seen parked outside the property this morning as firefighters reinspect the building.

Scaffolding has also been put up around it. 

(Image: Newsquest) A Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “At the height of the incident, we had crews in attendance from Swindon (x2), Stratton (x2), Westlea, Royal Wootton Bassett and Marlborough.  On arrival, firefighters found a fire within the kitchen, first-floor bedroom and roof space of the three-storey building. 

“Four breathing apparatus wearers used one main jet and one hose reel jet to tackle the fire which had also spread to the roof space.  A further two breathing apparatus wearers were deployed to the neighbouring property to monitor the roof space and protect the property from fire spread. 

“One 51-year-old female was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene by crews until the ambulance service were in attendance and conveyed to hospital.  Our stop was in at 07:42am today and a reinspection will take place at 11am this morning.”
