A Swindon primary school is inspiring the next generation of readers with its newly refurbished library and a visit from a local author.

South Marston CofE Primary School held an opening for its refurbished school library after school on Friday, which was well attended by parents as well as pupils.

Children’s author Kate Claxton also paid a visit to the school to speak with pupils about the importance of reading and read from her book ‘Searching For A Roarer’.

Kate said: “Reading for pleasure in this age group is at an all-time low nationally, and many schools don’t have their own library, so to be here and see children excited about reading is wonderful.

“The new library is beautiful and fully stocked with books, so hopefully it goes a long way to encouraging the children to read.”

The number of children and young people between eight and 18 that say they enjoy reading in their spare time has dropped from 43% in 2023 to 35% in 2024, according to the National Literacy Trust charity.

Kelly Richardson, a teacher at the school, said: “The whole library has been refurnished and repainted, while staff have built new shelving and added plush furniture and pillows to make it a bright, open space for the children to enjoy.”

Pupils also took the opportunity to spread their love for literacy beyond South Marston by donating books for Children in Need.

Mrs Richardson said: “We wanted to give something back to the local area, so we’ve had a donation box today where children have been able to donate books that we’ll be taking to local charities, and hopefully sending further afield.
