A pedestrian crossing that has reached the end of its life is being replaced later this month.

Swindon Borough Council will refurbish the toucan crossing on Lady Lane from Monday, November 25.

It was installed 22 years ago and is no longer fit for purpose. Cllr Ian Edwards described the equipment used at the crossing as “obsolete and in very poor condition”.

The revamp will involve replacing the existing rusting traffic signal pole, replacing the old signal controller, replacing the push buttons, cable, vehicle detection and installing a new remote monitoring facilities.

The works will take approximately four days to complete.

While that is being carried out, temporary crossings will be installed to allow pedestrians and cyclists to continue to cross the road safely.

The crossing connects footpaths and cycle paths on either side of a busy main road near the Orbital Shopping Park which is between the junctions with Elstree Way and Ealing Way.

A toucan crossing is the British term for a type of pedestrian crossing that also allows bicycles to be ridden across, since “two can” cross together.
