The Brunel Shopping Centre opened in 1971, marked by the unveiling of a statue of its namesake in Havelock Square.
Vintage images from the Adver archives show the plans for the centre and its gradual construction, as well as the moment crowds gathered in Havelock Square for the grand opening.
Other nostalgic photos capture shopfronts from times gone by, the travelators which took shoppers to the upper level before they were replaced with escalators, and the bridge between the Arcade and main hub which is now The Crossing food court.
