Part of Swindon town centre's main shopping hub has been closed off to the public.

People visiting the Brunel Shopping Centre earlier this week found that they could no longer access the Arcade section from the Canal Walk entrance or via The Crossing food hub.

Hoardings prevent pedestrians from passing any further than the Fillerz sandwich shop, and access from the Brunel North car park is no longer available.

To get between the two points, shoppers must take the stairs to the ground floor and use the path from Wharf Green which leads between the Brunel North and West car parks.

Most of the Arcade area's units are empty at the moment following a series of businesses moving elsewhere or closing.

Exterior entrances ensure customers can still visit the only remaining tenants on that side, Delikatesy Polskie Smaczek and Buzz Gym.

It used to also feature Boswells Cafe, the City Mazes escape room, Jungle Mania soft play centre, and House of Fraser, amongst other businesses.

Plans to redevelop this part of the shopping centre have been in the works for some time, though the exact nature of what it could become is not yet known.

The Adver has approached the Brunel for comment.
