Chippenham town centre has been closed off after flooding from Storm Bert caused carnage.

The River Avon burst its banks in the town overnight and flood water submerged several key roads around the town on the morning of Monday, November 25.

Among the areas submerged by water during the morning was the High Street, and several shops have reportedly been forced to close for the day, as well as town council services like the town hall.

The Bridge Centre Roundabout was also underwater on Monday morning, forcing police to close the A4 Avenue La Fleche at the junction to prevent cars becoming stuck in the flood water.

Several other roads around the town and the wider Chippenham area were also closed or impassable due to flooding, combining to cause “severe delays” in the area.

A spokesperson for the town council said: “Storm Bert has caused the River Avon to burst its banks in Chippenham Town Centre making access to the High Street impossible this morning.

“Flooding on arterial routes into the town has caused severe traffic delays this morning too.

“For the safety of our visitors and staff, we will be closed today, and we will update you further when we have more details.”
