A great-grandmother in Swindon celebrated her 100th birthday recently.

Laura Alley celebrated her centenary at Fessey House in Haydon Wick on Friday, November 15 with some of her loved ones, surrounded by balloons and decorations, wearing a crown, and receiving presents including a card from the King.

She worked in the town’s historic railway works - where she met her husband of more than 65 years, Lesley - before training to be a qualified nurse at Princess Margaret Hospital, cared for countless patients over the years, and then took on a role as a warden looking after the elderly in several schemes around Swindon up until she retired.

The pensioner loves spending time with her family, which includes sons Terry and Bob, grandchildren Nicola, Martin and Sammie, and seven great-grandchildren.

Daughter-in-law Julie Alley said: “Laura is loved very dearly by all of us, she is a proud mum and wonderful nan.

"Laura and Les met in the war, they loved travelling and had many wonderful holidays together, having many a laugh and good time with their family.

"Laura loved her bingo and Les liked a pint now and then - together they were the dream team."
