A Wiltshire town has begun to pick itself back up after being submerged in flood water.

Bradford on Avon has been affected by severe wet weather over the weekend as Storm Bert caused major disruption across the county.

Pictures have shown how the town's residents are starting to clear up the mess the storm has left behind as well as drain water from flooded properties.

The town centre was closed off to traffic yesterday, with St Margaret's Street and Market Street also being declared impassable after the River Avon burst its banks.

Councillor Jack Vittles, the Mayor of Bradford on Avon, said yesterday that the height of the river had reached "record levels".

The town centre and town bridge remain closed, with people advised to continue to avoid the flood water.

A spokesperson for Bradford on Avon Town Council said: "The town bridge is still closed to all vehicles. Wiltshire Council is sending an engineer to check the bridge in case the flooding has caused any structural damage.

"The bridge won't reopen until this inspection has happened and the engineer is happy that the bridge is safe."

The council have also announced today that the town's Christmas Lights Switch-On on Friday 29 November has been cancelled as a result of the flooding.
