Swindon residents have expressed mixed feelings about the proposed refurbishment plans for the Oasis Leisure Centre.

Seven Capital, the development company, is aiming to revamp the centre, which has been closed for four years.

Published on Wednesday, November 20 by the owners of the centre, and designed to gather public views ahead of a formal planning application the scheme includes housing.

The developer is also proposing a bowling alley, indoor golf, state-of-the-art gym, and a café with new all-weather pitches and multi-use games areas taking up the part of the site now covered by the sports hall.

However, many locals remain sceptical that the plans will meet their expectations.

Kathryn Rees commented on Facebook, saying: "Might be time to consider supporting the plans as is, right now, so we don't end up with nothing."

She expressed concern that blocking the current plans could lead to the community ending up with nothing.

In response the Save Oasis Swindon group urged residents to attend a meeting on the plans, stating: "Swindon residents hate it. Pool layout has been altered significantly and divided up."

Ashley Eaglestone shared a more critical view, highlighting the history of the Oasis and what he sees as a lack of foresight from local authorities.

He said: "So let me get this right.

"Swindon people had the Oasis with football pitches, cycle track and running track."

Ashley's comments resonated with other commentators who feel the community has been short-changed over the years.

Zoie Obeney added to the sentiment, noting: "Disgusting isn't it people need places to go, otherwise what's the point in all the houses!"

Many residents believe that the ongoing development of apartments without adequate leisure facilities is a major concern.

The Save Oasis Swindon group has been vocal about its desire to see the leisure centre restored to its former glory.

The group argues that the proposed plans do not include essential features like a wave machine or sports hall.

"Too many apartments not enough parking.

"Apartments should go on Claires site only," it stated, further undelirning the community's frustrations.

Amid these concerns, some residents, like Dean Kershaw-Evans, view the plans more positively.

He said: "Looks alright to be honest, better than nothing...although Swindon does have plenty of other places to go if the Oasis never reopens."

This sentiment is a reflection of the divide among residents, with some willing to compromise for any development, while others remain steadfast in their demands for better facilities.

Critics of the housing element of the scheme argue that Swindon is becoming overwhelmed by new homes without the necessary infrastructure to support them.

Amanda Matts stated: "Why keep building more and more housing in Swindon?

"The infrastructure just can’t take any more traffic."

This frustration is echoed throughout the comments, with residents highlighting the need for improved services such as schools and healthcare facilities.

Ryan Kirby's comment encapsulated the scepticism many feel, as he said: "wave goodbye 👋 😂," suggesting that the proposed leisure centre may not materialise as residents hope.

Others, like Dee Riordan, lament the loss of local amenities: "Residents of this town have had everything taken from them...leisure centres, even good quality shopping has gone."

Despite the mixed reactions, there is a clear desire among many in Swindon for an amenity that caters to the needs of the community.

As local officials prepare to review Seven Capital's plans it is seen as crucial for residents to voice their opinions and concerns.

In a town that has seen significant changes over the years, the fate of the Oasis Leisure Centre remains a contentious issue.

The outcome of the plans may shape the future of Swindon’s leisure facilities for years to come, and residents are being urged to make their voices heard before it's too late.
