The council has given the latest update on efforts to bring a long-abandoned hose back into use in line with the wishes of local neighbours and landlords.

One long-suffering landlord was given hope of progress by the appearance of signs for a construction company.

A Construction Edge spokesperson said in October the aim was to turn 57 Victoria Road into flats, but that no contract had been signed with the landlord.

But hopes were dashed when the signs were removed shortly after.

Chris Evans said: “The latest I have heard is that the builders have taken down the protective fencing and their advertising banner since they were not given any assurances about payment for the proposed works.(Image: Newsquest)

“57 Victoria Road remains a disgusting eyesore on one of the most prominent roads in Swindon.”

But Swindon Borough Council says that despite appearances, progress is being made behind the scenes.

A spokesperson said: “Bringing long-term empty properties back into use can be an extremely lengthy and complicated process and we appreciate the slow pace can be frustrating for neighbours.

“After initially indicating to the owner we would use powers under the Housing Act to ensure work was carried out on the property, things are now progressing behind the scenes, which are not obvious to those who are not involved.

“The owner of the property is now fully engaging with us and he is taking steps to improve the front of the house. Structural repairs will also need to be undertaken, but this is not something that can be done quickly.

“A pest controller has also been out to the home and has confirmed there is no evidence of vermin present.

The owner of the property, Minaz Moledina, an accountant who works in Corsham, was served a Section 215 notice by Swindon Borough Council in the summer.

This ordered that he refurbish the property - or the council will do it for him, with the council threatening in July to “follow through with the works in default”.

But Chris Evans has been vocal about his frustration at the lack of visible progress on the house despite council assurances and threats.

Other properties owned by Moledina have been the topic of complaints, with 59 Victoria Road spilling raw sewage into another neighbour's house.

Mr Moledina has so far refused to comment.
