Roadworks have caused “absolute chaos” for commuters on a key A-road even though they are still not due to start for another month.

Temporary traffic lights and a lane closure have caused heavy delays on the Oxford to Swindon A420 at the Longcot junction between Watchfield and Faringdon, and the council is applying pressure on the responsible company to “sort the problem out”.

However, one driver was further angered that work is not due to start at the site until January 6.

Chloe, said: "It is causing absolute chaos and miles of traffic each way.  I think it’s appalling that they are not starting for over a month.

“Having to travel in this every day to work in Swindon from Faringdon, I am having to leave an hour earlier.

“The surrounding roads are now much busier like the road to Fernham and Longcot.”

She says she even witnessed multiple accidents in the traffic confusion, made worse by “terrible road conditions, potholes and surface water from flooding roads and ice.”

The roadworks are in the jurisdiction of Oxfordshire County Council but also affect Wiltshire and Swindon residents who use this road.

A sign at the site advises work will run from January 6 to February 7.

An Oxfordshire County Council spokesperson said: “This relates to a failed Vodafone manhole cover.

“Emergency 2-way lights are in use. Vodafone has been made aware and urgently requested to sort the problem out.”

Vodafone UK have been contacted for comment.
