Wiltshire MPs were among those casting their votes on the controversial assisted dying bill, which was backed by 330 to 275 on Friday, November 29.

After over four hours of debate, the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill was progressed to the next stage in Parliament.

Despite it being an unwhipped vote, meaning that MPs were not instructed to vote a certain way by their party, Wiltshire's Conservative MPs were the county's only MPs to oppose the proposal.

Liberal Democrat MP for Chippenham Sarah Gibson voted in approval, along with Liberal Democrat MP for Melksham and Devizes Brian Mathew.

Up in South Cotswolds, Lib Dem Roz Savage also backed the bill, along with Swindon’s Labour MPs Will Stone and Heidi Alexander.

Down in Salisbury, Conservative MP John Glen voted against the bill.

If it became law, the bill would give some terminally ill people in England and Wales legal assistance to end their own life.

However, these individuals must meet certain requirements, such as being expected to die within six months and having the mental capacity to make a clear, settled and informed wish, free from coercion or pressure.
