I was pleased to see justice being served recently on the killer of 5 women in Norwich. Relatively speaking it took the jury no time at all to find this killer guilty. Good result.
There are two aspects to this case that concerned me. This case is not alone in its treatment by the press, where they did more than report facts, but were insensitive to the families of the murdered women and then gave the families of those women a platform to make comments after the verdict, for which they were barely equipped to do.
The insensitivity I refer to is prior to, during and after the trial, the five women were constantly referred to as prostitutes. May be they were, but they were women first, surely the dignity they shed by choice and circumstance in life could have been afforded them in their untimely deaths. It seemed to me reports couldn't mention their line of work enough.
The other matter, the platform given to the affected families, whether you believe in the death penalty or not, I do, there is nothing surer than the family of a victim will definitely be in favour of. The news conference the families gave after the verdict, no doubt orchestrated by the press, showed people not suited to presenting a case for capital punishment. Surely the people encouraging them could have gauged that. It will never be, if indeed it ever could be at anytime, at the end of a trail, a successful case for the death penalty will be made.
The murderous Mr. Steven Wright has received the maximum sentence allowed as things stand, which is a pity, considering his obvious lack of any sanctity for human life. Cases like his are ideal candidates for treatment of equal standards to those his likes dole out.
