The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde is presented at the Salisbury Playhouse until Saturday May 23. Wilde created extreme characters to comment on the absurdity of Victorian Society and his play is bursting with witty dialogue and cunning social satire. Joanna McCallum (who played opposite Alec Guinness’ Shylock at Chichester and, more recently, Habeus Corpus, The Peter Hall Company and Seasons with the RSC) plays the infamous Lady Bracknell. She played the younger Gwendoline at Bristol Old Vic in 1977. Tickets are from £10 to £19 on 01722 320333.
