A TYRE was thrown over a speed camera and set alight in an early morning vandal attack.
Swindon firefighters from the Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to the site on the A420 near South Marston at 2.35am yesterday.
They used one hose reel jet to extinguish the flames.
Coun Peter Greenhalgh, Swindon Council’s cabinet member for sustainability, transport and strategic planning, was appalled by the news.
“I think it’s disgusting that people see fit to damage public property,” said the Conservative councillor for Freshbrook and Grange Park.
“If someone has been caught for speeding they should fight it legitimately in court or pay the fine.”
He added that new speed cameras cost between £50,000 and £80,000.
Police are now investigating the attack. Information can be passed on to them by calling 0845 408 7000 or to Crimestoppers, where information can be left anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
