SWINDON Council has signed a contract with British Gas as part of Britain's biggest independent initiative to tackle household fuel poverty.

The British Gas "here to help" scheme is an alliance including social housing firms and five major national charities, which aims to improve energy efficiency in households, while providing access to previously unclaimed household benefits.

Work to survey the chosen properties in Swindon has begun and will focus on making energy efficiency improvements to households through the installation of cavity wall and loft insulation and hot water tank jackets. Funding for the project will come jointly from British Gas and Swindon Council.

Households in Swindon benefiting from "here to help" may receive energy efficiency products and advice, such as free or subsidised cavity wall and loft insulation to help keep homes warmer and save money on energy bills.

Householders may also benefit from increased income through benefits assessments, safety and increased security through installation of security devices such as spy holes and security.

Swindon Council leader Coun Mike Bawden (Con, Old Town and Lawn), said: "The council is pleased to be taking part in "here to help" and the heating and energy efficiency improvements it will make to peoples' homes in Swindon."

Jean Parbrook from British Gas, said, "We are delighted that Swindon Council has signed up. We are sure that it will bring many benefits to households in the Swindon area." All residents who have qualified for "here to help" have been sent letters.
