WE may have been basking in glorious sunshine by day, but at night a dramatic lightning storm dominated the horizon.

Huge claps of thunder and massive forks of lightning filled the sky on Wednesday.

Adver reader and amateur photographer Garry Tracey was lucky enough to capture this impressive picture over the rooftops.

This was the view from his window across Oxford Road towards the Sandgate pub at the height of the storm.

Engineer and dad-of-two Garry, 44, who lives in Oxford Road, said: "It was a great storm, everyone was getting a bit excited. I was looking out my bedroom window and I thought I'd have a go.

"A bit of it is luck, to be honest."

There is a slight chance we may be in for some more storms, although the worst of the weather is heading in the Bristol direction, according to the Met office.

"It was a corker," said Met spokesman John Hammond about Wednesday night's storm. "It was a nice day until the cloud bubbled up and temperatures got into the early 20s. There was enough moisture in the atmosphere that once the temperature got to a certain height it triggered these localised storms."

He said the thunder and lightning seemed to be experienced mostly along the M4 corridor.

Yesterday the clouds had cleared and the sun made a welcome reappearance. Temperatures were already nudging the 20C mark by lunchtime.

Mr Hammond forecast that Swindon should stay relatively dry over the next few days. There will be a small chance of showers today and tomorrow, with Sunday improving.

But temperatures are expected to stay pleasantly warm and above average.
