BRITAIN's gardens might have been slow in springing to life following the coldest March for 10 years and an unpredictable stop start April.

However garden industry experts predict blooming sales figures as milder temperatures finally arrive. The delayed springtime spending frenzy could see tills ringing to the tune of £600m throughout May and June an increase of 12 per cent on the same period in 2005.

The anticipated green stampede in garden centres and retailers is based on historical data from PlantforLife, an initiative spearheaded by the Horticultural Trades Association to raise awareness of the benefits of plants and green spaces.

The figures point towards a trend where periods of uncharacteristically poor weather are followed by dramatic spending peaks.
