THE victim of a road rage attack who had his window punched in by a cyclist says the culprit must be caught before he strikes again.

Chris Cooper, 50, was driving with two women passengers when he beeped a man on a bike for cutting them up.

The next thing he knew the cyclist had smashed the window of his red Rover 416 with his bare fist.

A witness has described the man as a nutter' and police are keen to trace him.

Mr Cooper, of Stratton, said: "I just hope he gets caught. I'm worried about other drivers.

"I'm worried what will happen if someone else beeps him."

The incident happened just past Swindon College near the traffic lights on Crombey Street at about 8.15am yesterday.

Mr Cooper, who was driving with two colleagues, aged 38 and 42, said: "It was just such a shock.

"Luckily no-one was hurt but we were covered in glass and I could have had a heart attack."

PC Steve Whitehead said: "Literally all they did was beep at him and he smashed the window.

"They are shaken up by it but fortunately not physically injured.

"Some of the broken glass came into the vehicle but it didn't cut them. We would appeal for anyone with information to come forward."

One woman who was in the car behind the Mr Cooper said that she wanted to help but did not know what to do.

"I felt really sorry for the people in the car because there was nothing they could do," she said.

"I was driving right behind them and they were going really slowly.

"The man on the bike went from left to right across the front of them.

"The car in front had to brake and he tooted. The guy on the bike turned around and was swearing.

"They went to go past him and he put his fist through the window.

"It smashed the whole of the driver's side window. They got straight on the phone and he went off on his bike."

The woman said she could not believe what was happening as it was the cyclist who was in the wrong.

"There was just no need for it," she said.

"He was a nutter. He must have cut his hand.

"He cut them up. He could have got run over and all they did was beep."

The man is described as being in his 20s or 30s. He was stocky and bald.

Anyone with information should call PC Whitehead at Swindon police on 0845 408 7000.
