A MAN had to be cut free from his car after he collided with a horsebox lorry carrying three horses.

The accident happened on the B4019 Blunsdon to Highworth road yesterday morning close to the Freke Arms pub.

A red Volkswagen Golf and the horsebox were involved in the crash shortly after 10am.

Police believe the 28-year-old Golf driver, a man from Faringdon, may have lost control of his car as he drove from Highworth towards Blunsdon and was in collision with the horsebox travelling in the opposite direction.

Firefighters took more than an hour to free the driver of the Golf, who was taken to Great Western Hospital with a suspected fractured pelvis.

The 71-year-old driver of the horsebox, from Highworth, and his 66-year-old wife were unhurt and so were the three horses they were transporting.

Both vehicles were substantially damaged.

Police closed the road for four hours between the Cold Harbour pub and the Freke Arms as accident investigators conducted an examination of the scene.

Police would like to speak to any drivers who may have seen the Golf travelling between Highworth and Blunsdon.

Any witnesses are asked to contact PC Mark Green at Swindon police's road policing unit on 0845 408 7000.
