A CRICKLADE pupil has won a place at Eton College.

Hugo Popplewell, 12, has been celebrating after coming in the top three scholarship places for boys to be accepted for the school in September.

The youngster, who is a pupil at Prior Park Preparatory School in Cricklade, sat the scholarship papers alongside 126 other hopeful candidates from the UK and around the world.

He was awarded grades A and B in all subjects.

And not only did Hugo, of Marston Meysey, achieve a scholarship for his academic excellence but also a music scholarship, because he excels at the cello.

"I was excited and nervous at the same time and a bit overawed when I got to Eton for the three days of exams," said the 12-year-old.

"I found some papers really challenging but some do-able'.

"I was amazed and very surprised with my result. I never dreamt I'd do so well. I am looking forward to going to Eton although I'll miss Prior Park."

His proud mother, Clare, said she was delighted at Hugo's success and grateful to the school and all Hugo's teachers for all the extra work they put in to help her son prepare for the scholarship exams.

In September, Hugo will take his place at the top Berkshire school, which includes Princes William and Harry among its famous alumni.
