THERE may have been clouds overhead but the threat of rain didn't dampen the spirits of those taking part in this year's Wanborough beer race.

As the crowds of spectators gathered outside the Plough, the runners began limbering up.

However, it wasn't just their legs that they were warming up, but also their drinking arms.

The winner of the annual race, and streets ahead of the other runners was Mike Kent, who completed the course in 15 minutes.

Bringing up the rear of the pack was 25-year-old David Cox, who came second to last.

"This is the third time I've run it," he said. "It's nice to come and take part because everyone in the village turns out for it. It's pretty tough going though and running with a beer in your hands isn't easy."

He completed the course in 29 minutes.

David was running with his friend Alex Golding, who sped off without him.

"I ran it seven years ago and David beat me, so coming in before him was my main aim," said 25-year-old Alex.

"It is a nice day out but you do feel bad after it. Running with beer is hard work, but you enjoy it as much as you can."

Groups of runners have been gathering in the village on the Whitsun Bank Holiday for years to race from pub to pub, drinking a half pint of beer at each. Running for the first time this year was beer race virgin Kerrie Pound.

"I got roped into taking part by a friend, but it was fun," said the 33-year-old.

The starting venue changes each year and this week it was the turn of the Plough to take over.

From there the route took the 33 runners to the Harrow, the Brewers, the Cross Keys, and the Black Horse, with the finishing line back at the Plough.
