A GROUP to help new mums to breastfeed their babies has received a cash boost from Swindon Council.
Breastmates has received one of the council's sustainable development team grants.
The group, which received a grant for £150, was founded in November last year after 11 breastfeeding mums completed a six-week course to become peer supporters.
Breastmates runs weekly drop-in sessions where supporters and other members of the group listen and offer advice on any concerns from new mums.
The group says one of the best sources of breastfeeding support comes from other mothers. A health visitor is also on hand to give medical advice.
Many mums visit regularly, not just if they are experiencing difficulties, but also for a coffee and a chat.
The group welcomes about two new mums a week, with growing numbers forcing it to move to a larger venue at the Abbey Meads Community Centre.
Council grants for sustainable projects are available from the sustainable development team at the council. Each year there are 10 grants to distribute to community and voluntary groups.
Groups can apply for grants of up to £500 to help kick start small-scale sustainable projects. Schools cannot directly apply but applications can come from parent and teachers' associations or friends of the school groups.
