THREE drivers had a lucky escape when their cars collided on a country road. The crash happened after another motorist overtook a car on the Wanborough Road, heading towards Covingham last night.

The overtaking vehicle, a blue hatchback, failed to stop after the accident and police have appealed for that person and any witnesses to come forward.

Two cars travelling towards Wanborough, a Porsche 911 and a TVR Tuscan collided with a Mercedes going the other way as they stopped to avoid the blue car which had moved on to their side of the road.

Wanborough villagers came to help the men involved in the crash, just before 7pm, after hearing the noise of the collision.

Steve Champion, 32, of Shrivenham, the owner of the TVR, said: "I'm a bit shaken up and a bit annoyed that the driver didn't stop but apart from that I'm fine.

"It could have been a lot worse. Fortunately the three cars involved are all very well built and we're all all right."

Julian Hawkins, 40, lives on the High Street in Wanborough and uses the road everyday.

Dr Hawkins, who was driving the Porsche, said: "I'm just very relieved because it could have been a lot worse. I'm surprised that the other chap hasn't stopped.

"People in the village came because they heard it so it would be amazing if he didn't see or hear anything. I'm only 500 yards from home and the car was my pride and joy."

Nathan Morse, 39, who was driving the Mercedes, said: "I could see the blue car overtake a red car in front of me.

"The TVR was behind the Porsche coming the other way and they both tried to stop but they didn't in time and the TVR effectively pushed the Porsche into me.

"I'm shocked and rather annoyed that the driver didn't stop.

"I've got some cuts and bruises but physically I'm fine. We were all lucky really."

PC Matt Daynes urged the driver of the blue car to come forward.

"There's no suggestion of any speed involved it's just a case of an overtake being taken a little bit late.

"We need the person in the blue hatchback and any other witnesses to contact the police."

All three men were breathalysed at the scene and none was found to be over the limit.

The road was blocked for a short time.

Witnesses should call PC Daynes at Swindon police on 0845 408 7000.
