THE south west branch of Consumer Direct has warned Swindon residents to watch out for fake FIFA World Cup merchandise this summer.

Counterfeiters are cashing in on cheap FIFA World Cup and FA England team imitations to sell to unsuspecting fans.

Research suggests that up to 12 per cent of sports goods in the market place are fake and counterfeiting is a huge problem globally.

It is estimated that millions of counterfeit goods being produced and sold to unsuspecting buyers every year.

Clive Kenyon, Consumer Direct South West's centre manager said: "With World Cup fever upon us, Consumer Direct South West is warning fans to be suspicious of traders at car boot sales and street markets selling cut price World Cup merchandise such as branded clothes.

"Counterfeit goods are often a poor quality and are of course, illegal. Our fully trained consumer advisors can provide impartial advice on how to avoid buying counterfeit goods."
