THIS year's Swindon Cares week looks set to be a huge success. The week of charity events, which takes place from July 10 until July 15, was officially launched at Arkell's Brewery by the Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire John Bush.

"I have enormous pleasure in launching this year's Swindon Cares week," he said.

"It is very nice how the people of Swindon have really included me during my time in office and I've had the chance to get involved in some fantastic events.

"I wish all of you every success and hope you raise lots for the charities."

Swindon Cares is a charity fundraising week that features a range of activities and collects money for three beneficiaries.

The groups benefiting from this year's event are Working for Opportunities, Threshold Housing Link and the Green Hut.

The idea for the week was thought up by the Rotary Club four years ago.

Chairman of the Swindon Cares committee, James Arkell, said: "It shows the generosity of people in the town and it is wonderful.

"We will have won the football by the time the event starts and everyone will be tired from the Corporate Games, so this will be the perfect way to relax and have some fun."

Last year more than £16,000 was raised, benefiting Working for Opportunities, Threshold Housing Link, the Green Hut and the GWR FM Community Trust.

Cher Sawyer, of Threshold Housing Link said it was a fantastic idea.

"It is quite brave in a way for all these big Swindon companies to put their reputations on the line and support some not particularly sexy charities," she said.

"It is wonderful that they are all on board and it is all about bringing the community together.

"It doesn't matter whether you are the haves or have-nots, everyone is working towards the same goal."
