A mother has been found dead in the bedroom of her West Swindon home. Her 31-year-old partner, a fairground worker, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

He is being questioned by police at Gablecross police station.

Police and paramedics tried desperately to resuscitate the woman, who is in her 40s, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Residents in Wilmot Close, The Prinnels, where the body was found, have spoken of their shock.

The street is popular with young families and parents say they had to explain to their youngsters why the police were out in the area yesterday morning.

Acting Detective Sergeant Michael Selbie said: "Police were called to an address in Wilmot Close in Swindon just after midnight on Sunday, June 4.

"On arrival they found the body of a woman in her 40s on the bedroom floor.

"Attempts at resuscitation failed and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

"A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is being questioned at Swindon Police Station."

The woman is believed to have a daughter in her late teens or early 20s.

A mum-of-five who lives opposite the house said her children would miss her.

"It's her daughter I feel sorry for, she has been left to deal with this," she said.

"She was a lovely lady and I got on with her.My kids used to go over there and give her cuddles.

"She loved my kids to bits. It's nasty for the children to come out and see this going on."

The neighbour said the area was generally quite peaceful.

"We've never had anything like this," she said. You get the odd bit of trouble but it's not that bad.

"She was quiet and she was like everybody else, she would always speak to the neighbours.

"I didn't know him but he worked on the fairgrounds."

A mum-of-two who lives a few doors away said: "It's a big shock. I've lived here for about a year and it's quiet.

"It's a nice area and there's lots of young families, there's loads of young children about.

"We can't really believe what happened. I didn't hear anything but it's a real shock."
