DOZENS of people turned up to the polling station at The Moonrakers pub to cast their votes this morning.
Several voters from Penhill said they had decided to vote Liberal Democrat for the first time.
Florence Brown, 65, of Haydon View, Swindon, voted for the Lib Dems locally and the Conservatives nationally.
“I am voting differently in the local and national elections because I am voting for the person in the local elections but the party in the national election,” she said.
“ I don’t like one of the national parties at all. I don’t like the attitude of the people and all the things that have come out lately.
“Ideally I would have liked everyone not to have voted altogether so we could tell all the parties how we feel.
“Nationally I think I am voting for the lesser of two evils. It is the party I normally support but I’m not 100 per cent sure on it.”
Voters at Drove Road polling station were keeping schtum about who got their support.
While some said they would be sticking with old faithful, most said their mind would not be made up until they reached the polling booth.
Ena Raccani from Northampton Street has never missed a vote but said this year's election really got her thinking.
"Gone are the days when it was all very clear who you were going to vote for," she said.
"Now all the parties seem to be one. You just have to go with your instincts and hope you have made the right choice.
"It has never been as hard to choose as it has this time round."
Old Town and Lawn voters arrived in a steady stream to the polling station behind Commonweal School.
Peter and Elaine Cornes, who live off Okus Road, both voted Conservative nationally.
Peter, 63, said: “I can’t stand Gordon [Brown].
“What he’s done over the last 13 years is disgrace.
“We have got all this money and he’s thrown it away.
“My dad was a Labour man, but my favourite person was Margaret Thatcher, she was brilliant.”
Michelle Cull, of Old Town, said she had voted for the Liberal Democrats nationally.
She said: “I don’t know what’s going on at present with the government at the moment.
“I just think it’s time for a change and they’ll do it.”
Valerie and Brian Chadwick, from Old Town, had just cast their vote for the Labour parliamentary candidate and Liberal Democrat locally.
Valerie, 77, said: “With everything that’s been going wrong I have had more interest in this election than other elections and the closeness of the parties has made it more interesting.
