PUPILS from Broad Town Primary School indulged in football and food as Swindon Town treated them to an education week.

The project was organised by STFC and Swindon Borough Council.

Football development officer Shane Hewlett, goalkeeper Phil Smith, fitness and conditioning coach Dave Morrison and the head of player development Dave Byrne all helped the youngsters learn about healthy eating and develop their understanding of the world of work, while Advertiser editor Dave King also held a writing workshop.

Broad Town School headteacher Bridget Long said: “The aim of the week was to kick start our healthy school focus this term and to further develop our understanding of the world of work.

“During the week there was a real buzz of enthusiasm and excitement.

“The children thoroughly enjoyed all the activities and we have had lots of positive feedback from parents.

“The week helped to encourage the children to want to be physically active and to eat a healthy diet.

“I would like to thank everyone at Swindon Town Football Club for their contribution to making the week such a success and especially to Shane Hewlett for his hard work behind the scenes in ensuring that this was a real memorable week for the children.”

Monday saw Dave Morrison give a talk to the children about fitness and diet, before they used his advice to design a healthy menu – with the winning meal consisting of a tuna pasta bake, jacket potato and salad with fruit salad, a fruit smoothie and iced water.

Coaching sessions for all classes were held on Tuesday. The following day Dave King spoke to the pupils about his role as editor of the Advertiser and held a workshop about being a reporter, asking questions and writing a newspaper report.

In the afternoon a press conference was run with STFC’s club ambassador Jon Holloway and former chairman Mike Spearman which enabled the youngsters to put in practice the skills they had been taught during the morning session.

There was a Swindon Town quiz on the Thursday, to test the pupils’ knowledge of what they had learnt that week, and on Friday the winning healthy food menu was cooked and pupils Isabelle Dow and Josh Baker got the chance to eat it with keeper Phil Smith and Shane Hewlett.
