A 30-year-old woman took her own life after spiralling into debt following years of cocaine abuse and depression, an inquest heard.
Lia Colucci, a buyer for the Amazon website, hanged herself at her home in Charles Street, Swindon, in November last year.
Her family had been unable to contact her so called the police who broke in and found her body on November 14.
At an inquest at Trowbridge Town Hall, coroner David Ridley, noted that she had been suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and depression and was also concerned over her financial status.
She had debts of £36,000, including a consolidation loan.
In a statement her brother, Leonardo, said she had started to self-harm while at university and that the post-traumatic stress disorder had been brought about by an incident that happened during her childhood. In August last year she was found by police in Savernake Forest having self-harmed.
Later that year she called him saying she had taken an overdose to take her own life and was admitted to Great Western Hospital.
Mr Colucci said she would ask her family for money and they agreed to give her a daily allowance.
The family’s last contact with her was on Thursday, November 12, when she went to her parents’ house.
As she left she told her brother to tell her parents she would not be going there for dinner at Christmas.
She was admitted to hospital in London in February last year for treatment for her depression and had been seeing the community psychiatric nurses in Swindon.
She had also been detained under the Mental Health Act following the incident in Savernake Forest in August, but an assessment by Swindon Council had concluded her risk of suicide was low.
In a statement community psychiatric nurse Susan Shapiott said she had been shocked to hear of Miss Colucci’s death as she had deemed her to be depressed, but not suicidal. She added that Miss Colucci had been reducing her own medication and she had warned her against this.
A post-mortem examination concluded that the cause of Miss Colucci’s death was compression to the neck caused by a ligature but added that her depression was a contributing factor.
No alcohol or drugs were found in her blood although there were the remains of a cocaine product because of her previous use of the drug.
Mr Ridley concluded that Miss Colucci had taken her own life but added that it had been while she was suffering from depression.
Mr Colucci said after the inquest: “This was a girl who had everything and what I’ve discovered since she took her own life is that she was a heavy cocaine user, not for months but for years.
“It was a case of something that started off as recreational and became more of a dependency as time went on.
“By the time she died she wasn’t the same person, she wasn’t my sister. The drug had taken control.”
