Following last week’s general election, it looks as though there could well still be some uncertain times ahead of us. But I’m pretty sure there’s an old wives’ tale that says the best music always comes out of bad times. If that’s true, this could turn out to be a fantastic result for music lovers all over the country.

If, like me, you’re more interested in musicians than politicians, you might already be aware of Bozley and Dave. A few years ago they were part of garage-rockers Rag Doll Girl, before morphing into opinion-dividing novelty ravers Pause.Break.Riot!, but now they’ve gone all serious again. Their latest project, Heretics, offers up the sort of synthy post-punk that hasn’t been heard since Margaret Thatcher was in power.

To write Heretics off as an 80’s pastiche would be a tad harsh, but to say that they sound a lot like Ian Curtis fronting Depeche Mode would probably be a pretty accurate description. ‘Trust’ is brooding and gloomy, yet euphoric, while ‘Don’t Be Late’ fuses overdriven My Bloody Valentine-y guitars with clinical electronic drums and shimmering synths. ‘Count Down The Time’ is probably the most contemporary sounding track on their MySpace page and has a more commercial edge to it, with its chart-friendly chord sequences and stratospheric chorus.

They played their first gig in Swindon last week, but if you missed them, don’t fret, just keep checking their MySpace for gig listings.
