HARDWORKING nurses had a rare opportunity to put their feet up during a pampering day at the Ridgeway Hospital.

The BMI-run hospital in Wroughton laid on the event as a thanks to dedicated staff on National Nurses’ Day.

Nurses received a fob watch each, a mini makeover courtesy of Virgin Vie and afternoon tea.

Acting director of nursing Helen Cecil said: “It was lovely day and great to have some recognition for all the work we put in and the hours we do.”

Helen, who has been in nursing for 30 years, said events such as this help staff morale.

She said: “Nursing is celebrating its 100th year and it’s a job that is always needed in our society.

“We deal with ill people more than any other medical profession because we tend to be a first point of call so it is nice to have that rewarded with a little treat.”

Colleague Tina West, outpatient manager, said: “We get a lot of thanks from patients and their families and it’s really nice.

“It’s a shame when other hospitals don’t go in for nurses’ day because it means so much to staff. But obviously people are busy and work always comes first.”

Senior staff nurse Sarah Penman said: “The day was lovely and we felt really spoilt to have an afternoon tea laid on especially for us.

“At the end of the day, hospital’s couldn’t function without nurses – so it is lovely to be thanked and to know you’re appreciated.”
