BARGAIN supermarket chain Aldi wants to open up to seven stores in Swindon in the near future.

The firm’s announcement comes days before an informal public consultation to canvas views on their proposal to build a third neighbourhood food store on land at Latham Road in North Swindon.

Representatives from Aldi Stores and their planning consultants, Turley Associates, will be on hand to explain the development proposals to the public.

Aldi proposes to build a 990sqm food store on the 1.6 acre site, along with 100 car parking spaces and landscaping.

The store will feature a contemporary energy efficient design to fit in with the high profile site fronting Thamesdown Drive. A similar store has recently been completed in Hounslow, London.

Swindon is already home to Aldi’s regional distribution centre and head office at South Marston Park.

Aldi has recently invested in a £35 million extension at its South Marston Park site to create a state of the art facility in excess of 560,000 sq ft.

It also has a store at Hobley Drive in Stratton St Margaret and has recently achieved planning permission for a second store at Drove Road in Swindon.

In a statement, Richard Williams, Aldi’s stores property director, based in Swindon, said the firm had an ambition to achieve a network of between five to seven neighbourhood food stores in Swindon.

The Drove Road site has been empty for a number of months while the planning application was finalised.

Aldi currently have 410 stores within the UK and focuses on providing low-priced food.

The exhibition will be held on Monday, May 17, between 2pm and 6pm at Abbey Meads Community School.
