A 70-YEAR-OLD self-prolaimed ‘Supergran’ is climbing the highest mountain in Britain to raise money for her grandson and fulfil her husband’s last wishes.

Pam Clemm, who turned 70 this week, wants to celebrate the milestone on top of Ben Nevis on Tuesday with a pint of Guinness.

Pam, of Lynwood Grove, Moredon, has already cycled 100 miles in a day for charity.

Her efforts are all to raise funds for a new wheelchair for grandson Paul Clemm, 9, who has cerebral palsy.

She said: “Supergran is back, this is my next challenge.

“It’s something I shall remember my 70th birthday by.

“Even if I’ve got to crawl the last bit I will do it.”

Pam is also motivated by the fact that before his death husband Victor’s last words were asking her to look after his grandson.

The grandmother-of-five hopes to raise around £500 of the £2,000 needed for the electric wheelchair for Paul, from Haydon Wick, who is unable to walk and gets about in an ordinary one at present.

So far she raised £300.

Retired youth worker Pam’s lifestyle changed dramatically after the death of her railway worker husband Vic, 75, in August 2004.

Struggling to come to terms with her loss, two years ago she also suddenly lost most of her hearing.

Last year, after realising she was a dress size 24, Pam took up cycling, running and boxing losing four stone and slimming down to a size 14 in a year.

Originally she had thought of attempting the Three Peaks Challenge, climbing the highest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales, but decided to aim for just the one.

Personal trainer and family friend Nathan Taylor, who recently completed a run across Europe in homage to the great European football clubs for charity, has been training Pam.

For the last two weeks they have been doing intensive hill sessions running up Cheril Hill, near Calne, in preparation.

Pam said each time she does it the training gets a bit easier.

She said: “I’m getting sort of excited feeling, it would be absolutely wonderful and it would be a tremendous achievement I think.

“It would be so good for other people – everyone talks about age and everything stops at a certain age.

“You can do anything if you are fit and want to do it.”

She said it was thinking of Paul that would get her to the top.

“Victor’s last words were ‘Will you look after Paul for me?’ – that sticks in my mind,” she said.

“By doing this I feel like I’m honouring what he asked me to do.

“I think my husband would be very pleased, I think he’s here looking after me.”

Nathan said: “She will go through a lot of pain doing this there’s no doubt about it,but she’s the sort of person who will laugh.

“We’ll have a Guinness at the top.”
