A COUPLE from Swindon are set to tie the knot in a gladiator-style wedding as part of a TV documentary.
Scott Dyton and fiancee Kate Bowles, of Mazurek Way, Haydon End, have chosen the theme for their marriage on Wednesday as part of new Channel Four series Wedding House.
They are one of 50 couples who are taking part in themed weddings being filmed until the end of August.
They will feature in the series towards the end of the summer.
Scott, 30, said: “We have been to so many weddings where it is the same, the vicar rambles on and it’s the same. This one will be different.”
Kate, 26, a mobile hairdresser, and Scott, a communications technician, have two young children and have been engaged for two years.
They applied for the reality show after the recession scuppered their chances of funding the wedding day themselves.
Scott said the wedding would be a mixture of influences from the film and historical knowledge.
After the couple came up with a theme for the wedding they discussed their ideas with the show’s wedding planner.
But they will only know what the wedding will really be like on the day.
Scott said he has asked to be dressed as Emperor Commodus, played by Joaquin Phoenix in the film version of Gladiator.
Kate has asked for an outfit based on women’s dresses from films such as Gladiator and Troy. They understand she will be transported to the London venue by horse-drawn chariot.
Scott wants his best man to be General Quintus and his three ushers dressed as gladiators. He said the scenery may be based on the Colosseum in Rome.
Fancy dress is optional for the guests, though some are already known to be coming in togas and gladiator outfits.
Another idea Scott had come up with to provide entertainment during the signing of the marriage register was for the gladiators to try to assassinate him leading to a sword fight between them and Quintus.
Scott had originally planned to use shares in BT to pay for a wedding, but when the share price dropped he was forced to delay.
He decided to give the Channel Four programme a go.
Scott said: “Kate’s not as keen – I have had to talk her into parts of it.
“Kate had agreed with me we were going to have a different wedding, not completely traditional, but not to the level we have taken it.
“I don’t think my mum and dad were expecting me to get married like this. They thought it would be in a church.
“They have had a bit of a problem getting their heads around it.”
Scott had originally come up with a Superman theme.
Both his children’s name refer to the superhero – three-year-old Brandon is named after the actor who played the character in Superman Returns and Kara-Elle, one, is based on Superman’s original birth name Kal-El.
However, when Scott realised he might have to get married in the famous red and blue lycra outfit he decided against it.
He said: “We are worried about it looking ridiculous, it can easily go that way.
“If it’s going to be silly we won’t do it.”
Scott said he is not too worried about people’s reaction.
He said: “My friends have laughed, my family thought it was just a television show, not a genuine wedding.
“They think I’m weird anyway so I’m not too concerned about that.”
