Local music heroes Beatbullyz are hoping their new genre of hip pop music will put their hometown firmly on the map when they play in Swindon tomorrow.
The band rocketed into the national music world following their appearance on the BBC Introducing stage at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Swindon last year.
The guys have been touring with N-Dubz and Scouting For Girls, performing at the Maida Vale Studios with BBC’s Huw Stevens, appearing before a 4,000-crowd at the Hammersmith Apollo, the Example tour, Koko Club in London and the O2 Wireless Festival.
Beatbullyz are: Bully, Bozo, Disco, Philonious Funk and Alex.
Bozo said:”It was awesome, 4,000 people with their mobiles up in the air and lights flashing away to our song Bounce.’’
Beatbullyz have a new single out called Skills, and they have been shortlist to represent England as an unofficial World Cup anthem on the commercial radio station Talksport, so they are urging all Swindonians to vote online for them. Bozo said: “We are flying the flag for Swindon. We were back on the Hollyoaks’ set filming for the Hollyoaks Music Show, broadcast on TV’s Channel 4 on May 29.’’
Beatbullyz were invited back to headline the BBC Introducing Stage at this year’s BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Bangor, North Wales. The boys managed to scoop outside funding to set up their own record label which they call Big Weekend Records.
“The Big Weekend kickstarted us into being known nationally and we make big weekend tunes,’’ said Bully.
The guys are also looking forward to playing with Kate Nash at Brick Lane in London. “It has been an exciting, exuberant whirlwind of a year. We have had six daytime plugs on Scott Mills show, Greg James, and of course Huw Stevens who is a huge fan of our music.
Our songs have also been used on Soccer AM and as part of the F1 Japanese grand prix coverage,’’ said Bully.
The guys are working on their debut album with Chris Baker from Mint Royale (Singing In The Rain) and Jim Elliot who writes for Ladyhawke and Kylie Minogue’s latest single, All The Lovers, which comes out in June.
Representing Swindon has always been important to Beatbullyz who are still based here.
“We are homegrown and organic, and at a pivotal point that no other band has reached since XTC. Swindon has had a bad rap and we want to show it in a different light,’’ said Bully.
Beatbullyz are playing tomorrow at 7pm in Liquid nightclub in Swindon for over 13s with support from Breakbeat UKSP who is N-Dubz drummer and Disco Pierats.
“We are using the sound system from Glastonbury Festival,’’ said Bozo. Tickets are £7 from 01793 531384.
