A DOCTOR has described finding a Swindon motorcyclist who had survived a head-on collision with another motorcyclist as a miracle.

The 19-year-old was airlifted to Bristol Frenchay Hospital with serious injuries after the collision near Berwick Bassett, south of Wroughton on the A4361.

Police said on Monday his condition was not believed to be life threatening.

A 60-year-old, from Calne, driving the other motorcycle died at the scene. Dr Adam Brownhill, is part of SWIFTMedics, a group of doctors who voluntarily assist the ambulance service in emergencies.

He happened to be two or three miles away when the call came in and was one of the first on the scene on Sunday shortly after 2.20pm.

He said: “If I’d had to certify two people dead that time it wouldn’t have surprised me – it’s almost miraculous that the young chap has got away with the injuries he has got.”

The 19-year-old was driving a white Honda motorcycle down the A4361 from Wroughton to Avebury.

About half a mile before the Berwick Bassett junction while negotiating a sharp right hand turn he colllided with the 60-year-old’s green Honda motorcycle head-on.

Dr Brownhill treated the 19-year-old at the scene, who had been thrown from his bike into a ditch, but was conscious.

Dr Brownhill said he had never been to an accident involving two motorcycles.

“It was quite a devastating, horrific crash,” said Dr Brownhill.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward particularly the driver of a light coloured BMW which may have been overtaken by a motorcycle prior to the incident.
