Wootton Bassett School emerged winners of a Dragons’ Den-style day of challenges – with a dragon of their own.

The team opened their presentation with the line, “We would like to introduce our dragon to the Dragons”, at a challenge day for gifted and talented Year 9 students. Other schools included St John’s in Marlborough, where the competition was held, Abbeyfield and Hardenhuish in Chippenham, John Bentley in Calne and Lavington, near Devizes.

Each school team had to design, make, cost and plan the marketing campaign of an item based on a theme of travel to Asia. A meal, model aeroplane and an inflight game were among the entries.

Students had to create the labelling and instructions for the product in at least two languages and then present their work to ‘dragons’ Martin Bunce, director of Marlborough-based Tin Horse Design; Philip Campaga, from Bath Spa University; Richard Henderson, of Haydens Bakery; James Smith, retired head of Preshute Primary School; and RAF Squadron Leader Richard Smith.

The Wootton Bassett team created a dragon-shaped neck support for use on long-haul flights.
