A MAN from Swindon has been charged with theft after shoppers surrounded him when he attempted to steal from an elderly man who was shopping in the town.

A 32-year-old man from Swindon was charged with attempted theft from the person following the incident at the Poundland store on Monday morning.

Officers from the Central Neighbourhood Policing Team were conducting targeted patrols in the town designed to combat purse dip offences when they were approached by members of the public who had surrounded a man inside the store when he was witnessed to have attempted to steal from an elderly man’s shopping bags.

The suspect was quickly arrested by officers.

He was subsequently charged with two other offences including shoplifting and another count of theft from the person.

PC Phil May of the Central Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) said: “This incident shows true community spirit and people looking out for the more vulnerable members of our society.

“Our officers fully appreciate the effect this sort of crime has on its victims which is why we proactively engage in targeted patrols to help combat this exact problem.

“I would however like to take this opportunity to remind people to be vigilant with their personal belongings so they don’t fall victim to this sort of crime.

“Be aware of who is in your personal space and keep you bag/s in sight at all times.”
