GARDENERS interested in attracting insects and wildlife to their gardens are being invited to a week dedicated to the topic at two Swindon garden centres next month.
Blooms Swindon Garden Centre and Swindon Garden Centre on Hyde Road in Stratton St Margaret are hosting the free event from Monday, June 21 until Sunday, June 27.
David Williams, manager of Blooms, which is located on Hays Lane near Wroughton, said: “Many insects and wild animals are our gardening friends. For example, ladybirds eat greenfly and other pests and hedgehogs forage at night for slugs and snails.
“During our Insect and Wildlife Week, which ties in with National Insect Week, we will be helping visitors to both garden centres learn how to encourage friendly bugs and beasts into their gardens.
“We’re also supporting the Bumblebee Conservation Trust during the event and are helping raise awareness of its work because bees are the gardener’s best friend. Some species of bee are seriously endangered, so we are keen to raise awareness of their plight.”
During the Insect and Wildlife Week, both garden centres will be handing out complimentary children’s activity sheets and offering free advice.
