THE CHIEF executive of Swindon council will be attempting to allay fears over job cuts by holding a series of staff briefings later this month.
Gavin Jones has written a ‘budget response’ letter to all the council’s employees.
It comes after a leading member of the council warned that job cuts would be ‘inevitable’.
Yesterday the Office for Budget Responsibility predicted that 600,000 public sector jobs would be lost over the next six years in the UK.
In his email to staff, which has been seen by the Adver, Mr Jones said: “The coalition Government’s budget announcement earlier this week makes it clear that local authorities and other public services can expect a major reduction in their budgets.
“I understand that it is an unsettling time for everyone. The changes to public sector pensions and the freeze on pay rises will be felt by all and for some people in particular the impact will be significant.”
Speaking after the coalition Government’s budget was announced last week, Coun Mark Edwards, cabinet member for finance, said he was expecting the council’s budget to be cut by about 30 per cent within 3-4 years’ time and said that would inevitably mean job cuts.
“It is clear that we are going to have to radically change Swindon Borough Council going forward,” he said.
Mr Jones said the council’s cabinet would be outlining its spending priorities for the year at a council meeting on July 21, which is likely to give some indication on where cuts could fall.
Then in October the council will be producing an emergency mid-year budget to take into account the £1.4m cuts the council has to find in its current year’s budget.
Mr Jones added: “Members would like to send a clear signal that we are serious about tackling our current and future challenges.
“In the meantime we must maintain a relentless focus on value for money and efficiency.
“It is important that we continue to work together as a strong team to ensure that we secure the best outcomes for the people we serve.
“I will be honest and open with you about any changes that need to be made and hope you will all help us achieve them.”
Mr Jones said he would be holding a day of briefings for all staff on July 29.
