A SWINDON company is celebrating after securing more than £100m in compensation for clients who were mis-sold financial products.

Renaissance, which was founded in 2004 from the spare bedroom of Andy Humphries, quickly became one of the UK’s leading claims management companies concentrating initially on mis-sold mortgage endowment policies and was successful in securing £20m of compensation.

In 2006 the company turned its attention to other financial complaints and following a brief incursion into the bank charges arena, securing £5m of compensation, it quickly became one of the market leaders in helping people get compensation for mis-sold payment protection insurance policies.

Earlier this month Renaissance, which is based in Peatmoor, achieved a major milestone in securing over £75m of PPI compensation for its clients.

While this is a phenomenal achievement, Renaissance has had to overcome several major obstacles put forward by the banks and the financial industry.

In July 2007, the banks went to court over the fairness of bank charges and in September 2010 they launched a legal case against the crackdown on the mis-selling of PPI.

While the banks ultimately won their case on bank charges, they had their PPI case thrown out of court last April.

This has paved the way for customers to submit complaints that could be worth around £6bn in compensation for policies they didn’t want, need or even know they had.

The Financial Services Authority has estimated that the major banks have paid out £1.9bn in PPI compensation during 2011 alone.

Renaissance managing director Martin Baker said: “I would urge anyone who has taken a loan or credit card to check whether they have PPI. It is staggering how many people didn’t even know they had it.

“If the policy was not fully explained or you didn’t need it, then compensation may be due. People will need to make a complaint and to do that will probably need to complete a number of lengthy forms but it could be worth it in the end.

“Many people do not have the time or inclination to go through the process themselves and that’s where Renaissance can help. We complete all the relevant documents ourselves from the information our clients supply us over the phone or online.

“We win in excess of 90 per cent of the cases we take on with the average compensation per client currently exceeding £4,000 and only charge a fee if we are successful.
