WORK to resurface Whitehead Street, in Eastcott, was finally completed on Saturday – two months after it was first started.

Residents contacted the Adver in February to complain of a ‘shoddy’ resurfacing job, which started in the week before Christmas and then stopped.

They said two patches were not done because cars were parked there at the time. The road had been left covered in loose chippings that scratch cars. They also raised safety fears after the sub-contractor did not replace about two feet of double yellow lines, which previously stopped cars parking over a fire hydrant manhole cover in the road.

On Saturday morning, workmen were due to resurface the two patches, sweep up the chippings and re-paint the double yellow lines to ensure firemen can access the hydrant.

Coun Dave Wood (Lib Dem, Eastcott) said: “It’s great. It’s long overdue and I have held the council to account about why it took quite so long, because the original works were done the week before Christmas.”

He said the delay came about because the materials used to do the job were not readily available and were different to that normally used for resurfacing, which also caused the loose chippings.
