SHOPPERS are set to be quids in again when another Aldi store opens in North Swindon later this year.
Work has started on the new 990 square metre store in Latham Road, which was given planning permission by Swindon Council more than a year ago.
The store, which is due to open on June 7, is the third Aldi in the town and is set to employ up to 12 people.
Phillip Warner, Aldi property director for the Swindon region, said: “We have received a great deal of support for the new store from both our existing customers and we are all very excited about opening the new store on Latham Road later this year, our third store in Swindon.
“Swindon is an important town for Aldi. Our regional head office and distribution centre is located in South Marston employing more than 200 local people and servicing 72 stores from London to Cornwall and West Wales.
“We have also been successfully trading from our Hobley Drive store in Swindon since February 2000 and we recently opened a second store on Drove Road in September 2011.”
The new store will employ a store manager, an assistant store manager and up to 10 store assistants.
It will have four aisles and the development will include 100 car parking spaces.
Two petitions were received by Swindon Council before the planning meeting in December 2010 in respect of the Latham Road store, one in favour of the application containing 1,523 signatures and one against containing 946 signatures.
There were 28 letters and emails sent individually to the council too, of which just two were in support of the plans.
Swindon Council’s planning committee imposed conditions including that the store should not sell items like newspapers, tobacco products and lottery tickets.
As part of the planning permission, the supermarket will also have to pay £4,725 for cycle and footpath improvements, £6,300 for partial improvements to evening bus services in the area, £4,200 towards public art and a community forest and £2,100 for improvements to road markings and signs at Latham Road junction.
