TOWN strikers Paul Benson and Alan Connell are hoping sausages will be the key to banging in the goals at Wembley in two weeks time.
Die-hard Swindon Town fan Andrew Butler runs his own butchers in Fairford and has produced a special sausage to mark the team making it to the cup final.
The 47-year-old is hoping the sausage, which is named The STFC, Seriously Tasty Fairford Creation, will be the recipe for success for The Robins to lift the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at Wembley on March 25.
The sausage is a tribute to Italian manager Paolo Di Canio and are made with locally sourced pork and beef as well as traditional Italian herbs oregano, basil and garlic.
“We have about 20 types of sausage at our shop and we were coming up with a new one and thought it would be good to do it as a tribute to the team’s success,” said Andrew.
“I tried to make the sausages as red as I could and they have Italian flavours because of Di Canio.
“They are not on sale yet but a few people have had a try of them and they have gone down really well.
“I am hoping the players like them and, if they win the cup, they could say it is down to the sausages.”
Yesterday he went to the County Ground to give the players a taste of his creation.
“I was just going to send some sausages in but being able to come down here and meet the players is great,” he said.
“Who knows, they may have them on the morning of the game with their bacon.”
Striker Paul Benson gave the bangers his seal of approval.
He said: “It is good when this kind of thing happens.
“There is something about being in a Wembley final – the fans get a bit creative and come up with some great ideas.
“We’ve got to be focused on the task in hand but if we win the next three games the Wembley game could be a real bonus and it is a great day for the fans.”
The sausages will be available from Andrew Butler’s Butchers, in Fairford, from Monday. And if Swindon win the cup Andrew has pledged that anyone who spends £15 in the shop will get 1lb of the STFC sausages free.
