A RUGBY star was teaching pupils how to kick obesity in to touch yesterday as he took part in a practice session at Dorcan Technology College.
Thinus Delport, former rugby union wing and full back for the Worcester Warriors and South Africa, visited year eight pupils to pass on his knowledge and inspire the next generation.
The scheme aims to get professional athletes visiting secondary schools to motivate pupils to apply the life lessons they have learned through sport to all aspects of their lives.
With the current Six Nations tournament taking place both Thinus and PE teacher Wendy Craig thought it was an ideal chance to pass on some rugby knowledge.
Thinus said: “It is great to be involved in this project and to be able to come out and speak to the kids.
“It is a chance to ensure the next generation get involved in the sport and to encourage them to get active.
Even if they are not the sporty kind there are plenty of roles available to get involved in sport.
“This encourages young people to engage with the sport, and with the six nations taking place, this is the perfect time.”
Ms Craig said: “We saw an advert on Sky Sports and contacted them to get a sports mentor to come to the school.
“It is good to give the young people a chance to see someone who has made it in the sport.
“In his talk he said he was not always the best at school so I think some of the children can relate to that and see what they can achieve.”
