BRIDLEWOOD Primary school has become the first in Swindon to be awarded Fairtrade status.
The Fairtrade movement aims to improve conditions for food producers around the globe and, upon hearing of the issue, children of Bridlewood School felt compelled to act.
Pupil Finley Smart, 10, said: “We feel strongly that Fairtrade is about making things fair for the farmers who grow our food across the world.”
Pupils from all year groups have spent the last 18 months raising awareness of Fairtrade.
Led by teacher Kerrie Stone, the children have been holding events to highlight the issue.
“We’ve all pulled together, children and adults, to work on Fairtrade,” said Mrs Stone.
“We’ve had Fairtrade cake sales, Fairtrade raffles, Fairtrade lessons, Fairtrade tea and coffee in the staffroom and even Fairtrade homework.”
The award was presented to the school on Friday by North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson.
